Customer Reviews
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an electrician for my hot water system installation?
Yes, you do. An electrician is required to safely disconnect and reconnect the power supply. We can organise one for you and include it in our quote, or you’re welcome to use your own electrician if you prefer.
Can I upgrade from a low-pressure cylinder to mains pressure?
Yes, you can. Upgrading from low pressure to mains pressure is usually a one-day job. We remove the old cylinder and install a new one either inside or outside, depending on what suits your home best. The easiest way to get started is to get in touch so we can visit the property, check the setup and put together a clear plan and quote.
What hot water system is best for my home?
It depends on your home and what you’re wanting to achieve. Each system has its own pros and cons. The right choice can come down to things like how many people live in the house, whether you want energy savings, whether you already have gas connected for a stovetop or fire, and where the cylinder can be placed. Get in touch and we can assess your setup and recommend the best option for your home.
What’s included in the install, and what’s not?
All our pricing is detailed and clearly shows what’s included. We’re practical people, so we do our best to cover all bases when it comes to pricing installs. You’ll receive a clear, itemised quote and have the chance to ask any questions before the job starts. From removal of the old system to installation, clean up and final testing, it’s all covered in the quote unless stated otherwise.
When should I repair a hot water cylinder versus replacing it entirely?
A repair is only possible when the leak is external, such as from a valve, fitting or the element. In those cases, we can usually fix the issue without replacing the whole cylinder. If water is dripping out the bottom of the hot water cylinder, that’s a sign the inner tank has a hole in it. Once that happens, the cylinder can’t be repaired and needs to be replaced as soon as possible to avoid further damage.
If you’re unsure, we can check it and let you know the best option.
What size hot water cylinder do I need?
It depends on how many people live in the home and how often hot water is used. As a general guide, we usually recommend a 180L cylinder for a couple or a small household with one bathroom. If you often have guests staying or multiple people showering back-to-back, you may want a slightly larger option.
For bigger homes or families, a 300L cylinder is usually the most cost-effective choice. There are sizes in between, but 180L and 300L tend to suit most Christchurch homes.
If you’re unsure, we can look at your setup and usage and recommend the right size.
How much to install a hot water unit?
We have several pricing options available on our website, depending on the type of system you choose. For a standard mains pressure upgrade, pricing starts at $3,425 plus GST. An electrician is also required for the installation, and we can organise one for you or you’re welcome to use your own.
For an exact price, it’s best to get in touch so we can confirm the right system and any site-specific requirements.
Can you install a hot water system yourself?
No. In New Zealand, only a registered plumber can install a hot water cylinder. This ensures the installation is safe, compliant and certified. Attempting to install one yourself can be dangerous and may void your insurance.
How often do hot water systems need to be replaced?
Most hot water cylinders come with warranties ranging from 5 to 12 years, but many last longer when the water quality is good. Factors like minerals and metals in the water can shorten the lifespan of a cylinder, and in some cases may even void warranties if they cause internal corrosion.
If you’re unsure about the condition of your system, we can assess it and let you know whether it’s still in good shape or getting close to replacement time.
Does insurance cover hot water cylinders?
In most cases, insurance won’t cover a hot water cylinder unless the damage is caused by a sudden and unexpected event. Gradual wear and tear is usually excluded. Every insurer is different though, and we’re not insurance specialists, so it’s always best to check with your insurer or broker if you’re unsure about your specific policy.
What are the signs that my hot water system is about to fail?
There’s no perfect way to predict when a cylinder will fail, but there are a few common warning signs. Corrosion or rust around the valves and pipework is one of the biggest indicators that the cylinder may not last much longer. You might also notice small drips from the fittings, inconsistent hot water, or unusual noises from the tank. If you see any of these signs, it’s worth getting it checked before it turns into a bigger issue.
