Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
When should plumbing work start during a new build project?
For a new build, we quote the entire plumbing job and complete it in three main stages. The first visit is before the concrete slab is poured, where we install the drains in or under the slab. The second visit is after the framing is complete, wrapped and the roof is on, which is when we complete the pre-pipe work. The final visit is once the flooring, painting and interior finishing are done. At that stage we install all tapware, bathroom fixtures and any external fittings such as venting and hose taps.
Do you work with both building companies and private owner-builders?
Yes, we work with both building companies and private owner-builders. Whether you’re managing your own project or working through a builder, we can handle all plumbing stages and coordinate with the rest of your team.
Can you help with council compliance and inspections?
Yes, we can handle this if it’s specified early in the pricing stage of the project. If it’s not arranged upfront, we assume the project manager will liaise with the building consent authority. If you want us to take care of compliance and inspections, just let us know at the beginning so we can include it in the plan.
How much does it cost for plumbing for a newly built home?
The cost can vary a lot from house to house, so the best option is to get in touch once you have your plans ready. We can review your layout, fixtures and requirements, then provide an accurate quote for your new build.
How do I choose between gas and electric hot water systems when building?
It mainly comes down to personal preference and how the home will be used. In most cases, an electric hot water cylinder is the best option because it’s reliable, low-maintenance and suits most Christchurch homes. Gas can be a good choice if you already plan to use gas for a stovetop or fire, or if the property is a holiday home or not occupied often, as you only pay for the hot water you actually use.
Access is also important. If gas bottles can’t be easily delivered or swapped at your property, an electric cylinder is usually the better option. If you’re unsure, we can look at your plans and recommend what will work best for your build.
Can you help design the plumbing layout to improve water pressure and Efficiency?
Yes. In most new homes there isn’t a detailed water pipe layout provided, so our plumbers design this on site using proven methods, manufacturer instructions and what works best for pressure and flow. We can also assist with sewer pipe designs, which are required for renovations and new builds. If you want to maximise pressure or efficiency, we can plan the layout to suit your home and fixtures.
What is the typical timeline for plumbing stages during a new build?
The drains in or under the slab are usually completed in one day. The pre-pipe stage also takes around one day for most homes. The final fit-off, where we install all tapware, fixtures and external fittings, is typically another one-day visit. It’s a straightforward three-stage process for most new builds.
